6 Wines Top the Charts in January

Wine Enthusiast had scarcely announced its selection of Octagon 2019 as one of the Top 100 Wines of the World in late 2023, before two other major tastings chimed in with similar news. If Valentine’s Day were not already on the calendar by universal consent, these tastings would have scheduled it. On the 17th of January, JamesSuckling.com published its latest thorough survey of Virginia wines, with highest ratings for four of ours. Two weeks later, the San Diego International Wine & Spirits Challenge cited another two of our wines as Platinum and Best in Class.

     2019 Nascent   92 Points

     2020 Octagon  93 Points

     2020 Nebbiolo Reserve  94 Points

2021 Cabernet Franc Goodlow Mountain  94 Points

2021 Sauvignon Blanc Reserve  95 Points, Best in Varietal, SD

2019 Paxxito  95 Points, Best Dessert Wine, SD

The biography of these wines at Barboursville, together with their track record in the tastings, is presented in the Wine Culture section of our website. Sauvignon Blanc is a classic triumph of devoted persistence and bold renovation, while the story of Nebbiolo is of immediate lift-off and a sustained arc of blazing success. Fully half of them were awarded the Virginia Governor’s Cup in previous vintages. All exemplify the deepest study of local plant selection and practice from their region of origin, as well as diligent site preparation and vine maintenance here. All 6 have earned Valentine after Valentine from critics and friends, and we’re very grateful for the company they allow us to keep.

We hope you will enjoy your own experience with these vintages; together, they cover the widest spectrum of pairing possibilities. May there be a Valentine here for everyone.
