Frost precautions paramount into May

In a narrow open row between Cabernet Franc and Nebbiolo parcels in our Goodlow Mountain vineyard, viticulturist Fernando Franco and his staff placed candles to protect against frost as temperatures dipped perilously low in the third week of April. Altogether 2,000 such candles are positioned and in use on current nights throughout the estate, in support of the wind machines for circulating the air over vulnerable fields. Historically, the risk of frost in our vineyards falls away in early May, but we are accustomed to exercising proactive protections of our priceless vines.
