Notes From the Winemaker - January 17th, 2013

Buongiorno

I am thankful that the quiet of the vineyard in February allows us to get out and about among friends a little more than during the growing season or the harvest, and I am fortunate to have been asked to present our wines in three places in the next month, where I'd like to visit more often than I can. 

On the 2nd of February, I'll be with Chef Mark Salter at his historic Robert Morris Inn, on the Maryland shore, for an evening with a great chef I knew from his years at Orient Express's Inn at Perry Cabin. The Robert Morris Inn in Oxford is a jewel of a waterside establishment, now being reinvigorated by the superb taste of Chef Mark and his partners, andthe dinner we plan to present together is one I look forward to with great enthusiasm. What it might lack in a Ground Hog it will certainly not lack in brilliant cuisine, and happy company. And, the Inn has structured the very most appealing overnight accommodations, for those who know better than to refuse a bountiful breakfast the following day. Reserve now, (410) 226-5111. 

Always, of course, the focus of happy company I know best is our own Palladio Restaurant, where Chef Melissa Close Hart and Sommelier Alessandro Medici have once again designed a Valentine's Dinner for the happiest occasion, for a single seating at 7:00pm on February 14. This auspicious feast is always one in high demand, but as I write, seating remains available, and I would urge contacting Alessandro soon, (540) 832-7848. 


For those to whom Valentine's Day deserves a weekend's celebration, our friends at Lansdowne Resort have invited Chef Melissa and me to present the best in food and wine from Barboursville Vineyards, at their own renowned establishment in Leesburg on Sunday, the 17th. Our very good friend Kevin Bacon, formerly of Charlottesville's beloved Boar's Head Inn, has been kind to offer us a great occasion to reach out to friends in northern Virginia and Washington, with a feast representing the essence of our own estate. Another part of Virginia of richly concentrated historical interest and beautiful estates, we urge any friends who do not know Leesburg to meet us at Lansdowne for a fine introduction to a setting worth many visits. I close by announcing a great prelude to the first major wine festival of the year! On the weekend of the 23rd and 24th, we will participate again in Richmond's Virginia Wine Expo, in the Convention Center, as part of a week of many wine-celebrating occasions about town. On Tuesday, the 19th, to kick things off, Chef Melissa and I will be at The Wine Loft in West Broad Village in Short Pump, to present several of our leading wines and those of our Founder in Italy, Gianni Zonin, to be served with tapas from her great repertoire from Palladio Restaurant.
