Notes From the Winemaker - July 10th, 2013

Francesco Zonin and I tasting Vermentino 2012 side-by-side with Viognier 2011 at Palladio Restaurant in June. One of our founder Gianni Zonin's three sons, Francesco has grown up with our winery in valuable annual visits all his life, and is an active leader in his family's operations worldwide. Photo Daniel Rosenbaum, The New York Times©The newspaper famous for scooping "all the news that's fit to print" placed our vineyard center stage again last Sunday, in an unusually comprehensive report for any periodical from outside the wine industry. The New York Times discovered us in 1976, our founding year, with their longtime wine writer Frank Prial reporting on Barboursville's initiation of a new era of European viticulture in Virginia. The great Johnny Apple, Washington bureau chief and intrepid international gastronome, announced in September, 2000 thatJefferson had got his wish, when the wine we still recall as our Secretariat, was flourishing in competitions from coast to coast, the Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve 1998 -- which at the age of 9, would win our third Virginia Governor's Cup. Five years later, we were profiled as a complete culinary destination, an idyllic place to stay in a fine wine region. Now, with international wine competitions showering us in Gold medals for the 2010 vintage, The Times' Adrienne Carter has taken the front page of the Sunday Business section to publish a solid, up-to-the-minute account of our winegrowing and our plans, which I commend for its accuracy and depth.

In interview comments published in this article, I remark on our happily deepening conviction that Vermentino, like Viognier, is a grape with a great future at Barboursville. I'm pleased to report that California's Critics Challenge International Wine Competition has just awarded its Gold Medalto Vermentino Reserve 2012, which we released only 30 days ago in very limited supply, available only at the winery. If you would like to pursue this beautiful wine, I urge you to contact the Tasting Room by telephone, (540) 832-3824.

One after the other, our reds from the stellar 2010 vintage are reminding us of the Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve 1998. The Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve will be released at our Autumn Barrel Tasting, and like the Merlot Reserve (selling now) it will be available only at the winery.

On August 18th, our friend Diego Gottardo, Executive Chef at Casa Vinicola Zonin, our owner's headquarters in Gambellara, Italy, will return to lead our Petit Verdot Reserve celebration, releasing the 2010 vintage. I feel I must encourage lovers of superior food and wine to book a place at that daytime feast, and enjoy tastings from a vintage worthy of capping the last decade. Please telephone for reservations, (540) 832-7848.

I close with grateful thanks for your support. Please enjoy its fruits.
